aerial photograph of Beauchief Abbey, Sheffield, UK. Medieval Beauchief Abbey was a Premonstratensian monastary founded in AD1183 and dissolved by Henry VIII in 1537. Following the Abbey's dissolutionthe stone was mined for other buildings and the Abbey fell into ruin. Fortuntaly the Abbey Tower remained intact and during the 17th century a small chapel was added to the rear so that it could be used as a church. This reuse allowed the Abbey Tower to survive to present times and the building is now a scheduled ancient monument.
